Impure isopropyl alcohol is purified by contacting it with hydrogen in the presence of a reduced nickel catalyst at a temperature in the range 175 DEG to 220 DEG F. under a hydrogen pressure of 75-150 p.s.i.g. and at a feed rate of from 5 to 10 volumes of liquid isopropyl alcohol per hour per volume of catalyst. The preferred catalyst is one containing 20 to 75 per cent by weight of reduced nickel on a support such as kieselguhr. In the examples impure isopropanol was purified by treating it with hydrogen at varying temperatures and pressures using a catalyst consisting of 65 per cent by weight of reduced nickel and 35 per cent of kieselguhr. |
