The method involves determining a camshaft position using a camshaft reference position when performing calibration operation. An operating point is set with a certain theoretical amount of fresh air, and lambda value of fuel is determined based on the theoretical amount of the fresh air. The lambda value of exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine is determined, where the internal combustion engine is arranged in an exhaust tract lambda probe. The camshaft reference position is determined from difference between the determined lambda value and a lambda reference value. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine.
