One or more disc-shaped inserts (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) are placed in a centrifugal casting tool (100) so that the tool surrounds the edge of each insert. The inserts are then rotated and a castable material introduced (102) into the tool near the insert edges. After hardening of the castable material a solid rim (10) is formed which is positively connected to each insert. Two or more inserts (2-6) may be placed on top of each other in the tool (100) and the rim joins all inserts together. Inserts may be filter membranes and/or woven spacer fabrics which, when joined together, form a filter unit. The disc shaped insert may be pre-stressed before loading in the tool and remains in this condition during the casting stage. Electronic components, in particular sensors, or other parts such as magnets, may be incorporated into the molded rim. The electronic components are arranged with the disc shaped insert in the tool prior to introducing castable material. In a variation of the process for forming edge rims on polygonal shaped inserts: a) a tool with a diameter much larger than the insert diameter is used; b) one or more inserts are arranged in the tool with one side of each insert projecting into an annular channel; c) the tool is rotated and castable material introduced close to the one side of each insert in the annular channel; d) the material is hardened to form a edge rim which positively encloses the insert side; e) all inserts in the tool are then rotated so that a second side projects into the annular channel; f) the process stages are repeated until all sides of each insert have a molded rim. An independent claim is included for a centrifugal molding tool (100) for forming a rim which comprises an upper part (104) and a lower part (105) which can be connected to each other to form an annular channel (106) into which castable material can be introduced. |
