There is provided a system and method for a digital receipt for use with an interoperable keychest. There is provided a method for online registration of a digital receipt associated with a content, comprising performing a transaction to obtain from a first distributor the content encrypted by a title key and a first digital rights management (DRM) license usable with the first distributor to access the title key, receiving from the first distributor the digital receipt associated with the content including information relevant to the transaction, and transmitting the digital receipt to the interoperable keychest acting as a central key repository (CKR) for an online registration of the digital receipt associated with the content. Authorized media distributors may then generate new DRM licenses using the CKR, enabling interoperable content playback of the same universal file across different media distributors and clients.

1. A method for online registration of a digital receipt associated with a universal file by a client, the method comprising:
performing, by the client, a transaction to obtain from a first distributor the universal file including a content and a location of a central key repository (CKR); receiving, by the client from the first distributor, the universal file including the content and the location of the CKR; receiving by the client from the first distributor the digital receipt associated with the universal file, wherein the digital receipt includes information relevant to the transaction; retrieving by the client the location of the CKR from the universal file received from the first distributor; transmitting by the client the digital receipt to the CKR to the location retrieved from the universal file for an online registration of the digital receipt associated with the universal file; retransmitting the digital receipt to the CKR for providing proof of the transaction; accessing a title key, from the CKR, after the CKR verifies a validity of the retransmitted digital receipt with the online registration thereby confirming the proof of the transaction; and initiating a playback of the content using the title key accessed from the CKR.
