The present invention provides an apparatus and a method for personal identification for performing a user identification or authentication on a TV or a set-top box (STB) required when providing a personalized service on a TV. The personal identification apparatus according to the present invention includes a remote control unit and a personal identification unit. The remote control unit includes a normal key and a special key, and receives a user authentication request, an identifier and a password through the normal key and the special key and delivers the user authentication request, the identifier and the password to the personal identification unit. The personal identification unit provides a user authentication interface screen based on the received user authentication request, determines whether to register the user is registered or not based on the received identifier and the password, and provides personalized service if the user is registered.
