The dishwasher (1) has screens (3, 5, 12) and an ultrasonic generator (22) that is arranged to clean the screens by ultrasound. The ultrasonic generator is arranged at bottom (13) of a pumping pot (2). The screens are arranged at upstream or downstream of a caustic solution pump (17). The screens are extended at bottom (8) of a rinsing container interior (4) and designed as fine or micro screens. A control device actuates the generator for producing the ultrasound in a mode of operation in which the caustic solution pump conveys rinsing water by the screens. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a dishwasher.
