A safety cutting device (10) includes a slidable insert (14) that moves longitudinally within a cavity (18) of a housing (16). The slidable insert (14) has a cutting blade (12) attached and moves within the housing (16) from a safe position in which the blade is covered to an exposed position for cutting. The safety cutting device (10) has a release button (56) positioned near an anterior end (22) of the housing. A biasing member (32) automatically retracts the blade when the release button (56) is activated.
