A brake lining includes a lining main body that is pressed against a braked body. The lining main body includes: a fixing layer that includes a fixing layer fiber material; an intermediate layer that is disposed on the fixing layer; and a surface layer that is disposed on the intermediate layer, that includes a surface layer fiber material, and that is placed in contact with and separated from the braked body, and a different type of fiber than the fixing layer fiber material is used as the surface layer fiber material.
