A method for the early diagnosis of the pathological gastroesophageal reflux (GER) comprises the analysis of questionnaire answers of the parents (reflux questionnaire form), endoscopic examination of the esophagus and the genetic analysis of the epithelial cells of the oral mucosa. When the total score according to the questionnaire exceeds 9, and homozygosity of A3 collagen gene is present, the pathological GER is suggested. When the total score according to the questionnaire is less than 6, and homozygosity of A3 collagen gene is not evident, the pathological GER may be ruled out. When the symptoms of the pathological GER are detected, the 24-hour pH monitoring of esophagus is provided. When the acid exposure is above the normal level by 95 %, the pathological GER is confirmed. |
