Polybasic macromolecular acids are prepared by a process wherein polyacrolein of molecular weight 5,000 to 300,000 is subjected to oxidation with an inorganic or organic peroxy compound or a mixture of substances producing an organic peroxy compound under the reaction conditions. The oxidizing agent may be peracetic acid, performic acid, perbutyric acid or a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid. Aqueous solutions of the products yield insoluble precipitates with polyethylene imine and solutions of lead acetate, silver nitrate, copper salts, calcium salts and barium salts. The products may be used as protective colloids, thickeners, sizing agents and finishes in the textile, paper and leather industries. Specification 797,459 is referred to. |
