The method involves placing the upper sheet stack (4a) in a sheet feed device (5), and pressing in a central zone by the holding-down devices (11,12). The upper sheet stack is held by lateral fixed supports (14,15), and is gripped by the grippers (8,9). The upper sheet stack is released by releasing the holding-down devices. The secondary sheet stack (4b) is pressed and held against the underneath sheet stack (4c). The upper sheet stack is removed. The grippers and the fixed supports are arranged at different longitudinal sides of a stacking device (1), so that peeling is possible. An independent claim is included for a device for automatically feeding sheets from printing machine in adhesive binding machine.
