A detection device comprises: a chip holder for retaining a detecting chip that includes a prism having a light-entrance face and a face on which a thin metal film is formed; a light source that emits excitation light; and an angle adjusting part which causes relative rotation between the optical axis of the excitation light and the chip holder. When scanning the angle of incidence of the excitation light on the thin metal film, the angle adjusting part causes relative rotation between the optical axis of the excitation light and the chip holder about the point of intersection, or in the proximity thereof, between a line extending from the optical axis of the excitation light that is incident on the light-entrance face when at the minimum angle in the scan angle range and a line extending from the optical axis of the excitation light that is incident on the light-entrance face when at the maximum angle in the scan angle range. |
