The method involves transmitting a signal from a transponder unit (1) to a reader (100), in one operating mode. The reader evaluates the signal as a modulation of its own field (110) by a transponder. The unit sends the signals as load modulation or as a modulated infrared radiation. The reader operates within and outside the communication range of the transponder unit, in the respective operating modes.
