In the production of fibres from molten slag rock or glass in which the melt is dropped on to the peripheral surface of one of a series of rotors arranged with their axes substantially horizontal and from which the melt is thrown on to the next succeeding rotor which rotates in the opposite angular direction, the apparatus comprises at least three fiberizing rotors and the <PICT:0999119/C1/1> minimum distance between the peripheral surfaces of any two fiberizing rotors (which will necessarily have a diameter of about 15 to 35 cm.) whose peripheral surfaces move in opposite directions is, at their closest point, at least 8 cm. Rotors 1, 2, 3, 4 are provided rotating in directions indicated by arrows and with the distance between rotors 1 and 3, 2 and 4 being greater than 8 cm. The rotors are positioned so that the path 10, 11, 12 taken by the molten stream 9 is as shown. Rotor 1 acts mainly as a distributer rotor, with only minor amounts of fiberizing, each rotor 2, 3, 4 producing more fibres, which are collected by a gas stream in a wind box 6 having blast nozzles 7 surrounding the rotors and extending at 8 into the space between the rotors 1 and 3, 2 and 4.
|
