PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for measuring tool length and a machine tool by which a workpiece can be processed in high accuracy even when a fixed state of the workpiece to a table is changed.SOLUTION: A method for measuring tool length includes: a workpiece setting step for setting a workpiece W on a table 12; a touch sensor setting step for setting a touch sensor 6 on the top surface of the workpiece W; a touch sensor coordinate position detecting step for detecting a coordinate position of the touch sensor 6 with a position detecting device (camera C); and a tool length measuring step for measuring a tool length of the tool by making the tip end of the tool get in touch with the touch sensor 6 after relatively displacing the table 12 and a spindle 18 so that the tool is located at the coordinate position.
