The device (2) has a measuring chamber (4) through which measurement gas is made to flow, and an input arranged at an infrared radiation source (3). A detector is arranged at an output for detecting gas concentration analysis by absorption losses weakened at a light beam and passed to an electronic measured variable processing unit (7). The electronic measured variable processing unit determines the gas concentration of total carbon contained in the measurement gas other than analyzing pollutant components of a spectral region of 1000-3200 per cm. The pollutant components are selected from a pollutant component group consisting of carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an optical gas analyzer device.
