The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0826312/IV (b)/1> in which M is lead, zinc, tellurium, cadmium or bismuth, and X is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or alkaryl, and the corresponding naphthalene and anthracene compounds. Basic lead p-nitrosophenolate is obtained as a precipitate by mixing dilute aqueous solutions of p-nitrosophenol, lead nitrate and sodium hydroxide in the molar ratio of 1:1:2. The precipitate is dried: and may then be used as an accelerator for rubber.ALSO:Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0826312/IV (a)/1> in which M is lead, zinc, tellurium, cadmium or bismuth, and X is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl, and the corresponding naphthalene and anthracene compounds are effective cross-linking agents for natural rubber and synthetic rubbers such as butyl rubber, nitrile rubber and silicone rubber. The preferred compound is basic lead p-nitrosophenolate, which may be used in conjunction with lead mercaptobenzothiazole. For ease of handling, the cross-linking agent may be mixed with an inert substance such as polyisobutylene. The cross-linking agent is added to the uncured rubber in the proportion of 0.5 to 10% by weight. |
