A rotary spherical valve has a casing made up of two parts 26, 27, Fig. 2, pressed from flat metal sheets and welded together in a plane through the centre of the valve and the longitudinal axis of the flow passage through the casing. The spherical closure-member 15 embodies opposed spindles 17, 18 housed in bearings 19, 20 welded round openings 28 punched in the parts 26, 27, the outer end 34 of the spindle 17 being connected to an operating means, not shown; the spindle 17 is provided with a thrust shoulder, and with a sleeve 38 keyed thereto which coacts with stop elements 41 on the bearing 19 to define the open and closed positions of the valve. An annular seat 21 located in each pipeconnecting flange 44, is maintained in contact with the closure 15 by a retainer 23 through a spring ring 22, each seat 21 incorporating teeth 45 engageable by ratchet means 46 on the closure whereby each time the valve is opened, the seats are rotated in opposite directions. The closure may include flat surfaces 70. One of the stop elements may be moved out of position to enable the closure member to be rotated full circle. Jigs are provided to facilitate positioning the various parts and welding of the casing; the interior of the flanges 44 are machined to enable each seat-seal ring 22a to bed properly. The seats and closure are rotated prior to use to lap the engaging surfaces thereof; the seats may be replaced by breaking the spot welds between the retainers 23 and body whilst the casing welds must be broken to enable the closure to be removed. In a modification, each seat assembly 79, Fig. 5, is slidably mounted in a counterbore 80 of a tubular member 81 welded to each casing pipe flange 43, 44; each seat is sealed relative to the counterbore 80 by a ring 87 of resilient material which is backed by a triangular section ring 88 loaded by a corrugated spring 89. In another modification, the closure member 96, Fig. 7, has a slotted opening 101 to receive the tang 102 on an operating stem 98 located in a bearing 99; diametrically opposite the opening 101 is a cylindrical recess 105 in which is a bearing pin 100 welded to the casing, and housing a spring 116 loading the closure member, Each seat 95 is urged into contact with the closure member and the associated seal ring 124 is loaded into engagement between the seat and the related casing pipe flange by a corrugated spring 120.</p>
