A device for purifying engine exhaust gases comprises a tubular member 10 fitted to the exhaust pipe and containing a plurality of mesh screens 18, 20, 22, 24, forming compartments containing absorbent materials, the outlet end of the member being provided with means 12 forming one or more air inlet openings 13 facing the inlet end of the member. The air mixes with the gases in the space 42 and flows through a screen 16 over the open outlet end of the member. The screens may be of stainless steel, phospher bronze, or aluminium bronze and may be dipped in cyclo-hexanol to prevent corrosion. Compartment 43 contains meerschaum, compartment 44 activated carbon, and compartment 45 cuprous chloride. In Fig. 5 the screens 54 are cup-shaped with their edges overlapped and are supported on rods 55, 56 which also support a frusto-conical member 64 of stainless steel forming the air inlet opening 70, the end 63 of which is provided with openings for the escape of the gases.</p> |
