PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of magnetic defects in two shields and to easily determine shapes of the two side shields.SOLUTION: The magnetic head includes a main magnetic pole 12 and a shield having an end surface arranged so as to surround the end surface of the main magnetic pole 12 on a medium facing surface. The shield includes a lower shield 13A, two side shields 13B and 13C, and an upper shield. The method for manufacturing the magnetic head includes: forming a mold of which shape is determined with photolithography and which is removed on the upper surface of the lower shield 13A; plating the mold without forming a seed layer; forming two side shields 13B and 13C on the upper surface of the lower shield 13A; removing the mold; and sequentially forming a first gap layer 27, the main magnetic pole 12, a second gap layer, and an upper shield.
