The method involves setting the characteristic in relation to a control parameter and an injected fuel quantity, where three different values of the control parameter are applied to determine the characteristic of a piezoelectric actuator. The three pairs of values for the values of the control parameter and the respective amount of fuel injected are determined using a quadratic regression curve. A quantity of load, a control period or a control voltage is used as the control parameter.
