[Also in Division G1] A yarn gauge comprising a source of diffused scattered light on one side of an axis and emitting light over an area subtending an obtuse angle from said axis in a plane normal thereto, and photoelectric means arranged on the opposite side of said axis to receive light energy from said area as a function of the cross-sectional dimensioning of a length of yarn positioned on or near said axis. The source of diffused light may comprise a collimating lens 2, Figs. 2 and 3, and a part cylindricalshell like or lenticular translucent body, 3a and 3b respectively. The shapes of bodies 3a and 3b are so chosen that the brightness of each point on surface 4a, 4b combines with its distance from the yarn 6 to give equal illumination of the yarn from all directions within the angleα. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 4, without a collimating lens, a lamp 10 is located in a bore in a transparent block 11 coated with white paint 13, the light therefrom being diffused by a translucent prism 14. The gauge may be incorporated in yarn clearing apparatus Fig. 1 (not shown) in which the signal from the photo-cell 5 controls a knife and the drive for a take up bobbin to break the yarn when an offstandard dimension is detected. A construction is described in which the parts 11, 12, 13 and 14 may be swung clear of the lamp 10 for maintenance.</p> |
