Provided is a retarder which has an optical anisotropic layer formed by hardening a composition (A) that contains a reverse wavelength dispersion polymerisable liquid crystal compound and a polymerisable monomer. The reverse wavelength dispersion polymerisable liquid crystal compound has, in a molecule, a main chain mesogen, and a side chain mesogen bonded to the main chain mesogen, and the main chain mesogen and the side chain mesogen are orientated in different directions. Thereby, birefringence (&Dgr;n) of the optical anisotropic layer has a reverse wavelength dispersion characteristic, and retardation of the optical anisotropic layer and retardation of a layer formed by hardening a composition (A0) satisfy a predetermined relationship. In said composition, the polymerisable monomer in the composition (A) is substituted by the reverse dispersion polymerisable liquid crystal compound. Also provided are a circularly polarising plate and a display device which include the retarder. |
