Succinimides of tetraethylene pentamines having application as detergents in lubricating oils and of the general formula: <FORM:0956802/C2/1> wherein R is derived from a polymer RH of an olefin containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms, said polymer containing from 30 to 200 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with a polymer of an olefin and then reacting the resultant succinic anhydride with tetraethylene pentamine. Specified polymers are those of ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 2-butene, isobutene and mixtures thereof and in particular a polymer of isobutene having a molecular weight of 1000.ALSO:Succinimides of tetraethylene pentamines having application as detergents in lubricating oils and of the general formula: <FORM:0956802/C3/1> wherein R is derived from a polymer RH of an olefin containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms, said polymer containing from 30 to 200 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with a polymer of an olefin and then reacting the resultant succinic anhydride with tetraethylene pentamine. The detergents find application in the following exemplified types of lubricating oils: naphthenic base, paraffin base, mixed base, oils derived from coal, alkylene polymers, alkylene oxide polymers, dicarboxylic acid esters, liquid esters of acids of phosphorus, alkyl benzenes, polyphenyls, alkyl biphenyl ethers and polymers of silicon. The examples illustrate the detergent properties of the products of the invention in SAE 30 base oils with/without zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate.ALSO:Succinimides of tetraethylene pentamines having application as detergents in lubricating oils and of the general formula <FORM:0956802/C3/1> wherein R is derived from a polymer RH of an olefin containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms, said polymer containing from 30 to 200 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with a polymer of an olefin and then reacting the resultant succinic anhydride with tetraethylene pentamine.
