A method of increasing the elastic elongation of a cable consists in first forming the cable into a helix by winding the cable round a core wire and then separating the cable from the core wire in such a manner that the cable retains its helical form. A cable composed of a number of strands twisted together is wound on a smooth wire core and is thus given a helical form. A spool 1 of such material is mounted in a twister a rotated about an axis x in a direction to tend to unwind cable 3 from the wire core 2. The cable 3 and core 2 are fed over a guide 4 up to a conical deflector 7 through which the core passes the cable 3 being deflected on to a spool 8 of a twister b rotating about an axis y in a direction opposite to that of the twister a. The core wire 2 is wound on a spool 9 of a twister c rotated at a speed slightly greater than that of the twister b, the spool 9 also being rotated slightly faster than the spool 8.</p> |
