An optical device (100) is provided with a first substrate (10), a second substrate (20), and an optical layer (30) provided between the two substrates. The first substrate has a first electrode (11) and a second electrode (12), and the second substrate has a third electrode (21). The optical layer includes a medium (31), and anisotropically-shaped particles (32) of which the direction of orientation changes depending on the direction of an electric field applied to the optical layer. The first electrode and second electrode, which are pectinate electrodes, are arranged so that respective branch parts (11a, 12a) mesh together via a predetermined gap. The relationships w1 < l, w2 < l, and g ≤ l ≤ w1 + w2 + g are satisfied, w1 being the width of the branch part of the first electrode, w2 being the width of the branch part of the second electrode, g being the predetermined gap, and l being the length of the anisotropically-shaped particles. |
