The cash box has a retaining element (60) that retains the value notes of the value note stack in a receiving area in pivoted-in position through a spring (66). The value notes are conveyed to and/or removed from the receiving area in pivoted-out position. A locking unit (67) for latching the retaining element is provided so that movement of the retaining element from the pivoted-in position into the pivoted-out position in a locked state is prevented while allowing the movement of the retaining element in an unlocked state. An independent claim is included for device for handling of value notes.
