A method of separating ions according to a physicochemical property such as m/z or ion mobility, said method comprising causing ions to perform a plurality of cycles or passes along or around an ion guide 4 such that the ions separate according to said property. Ions are ejected from an ion exit region 6 by applying a force to the ions such that only those having a physicochemical property value that is either above or below a threshold are ejected as they pass therethrough, while ions having a physicochemical property value below or above said threshold value, respectively, remain within the device. The force applied to the ions is varied with time such that the physicochemical property value of the ions ejected also varies. This method allows all ions to be ejected from the ion guide only after having performed the same predetermined number of cycles or passes along or around the device. |
