[Also in Division G3] A speed governor, e.g. for an air turbine, has a rotatable mechanism 10, Figs. 2, 3, carrying flyweights 37 arranged to be moved radially outwards away from one another by centrifugal force against the action of spring steel members 35, the flyweights acting as a valve to control the rate of flow of a control fluid through an orifice 20 which opens on to the axis of rotation of the mechanism 10. A turbine 12, Fig. 1, has an inlet conduit 13 for fluid under pressure, a valve 14 being provided in the inlet conduit, which valve is opened and closed by a pneumatic actuator 15. Fluid under pressure is supplied to the actuator from the inlet conduit 13 through a conduit 16, and as long as pressure is applied to the actuator the valve 14 will remain open. However, the pressure on the actuator is reduced by bleeding fluid through the orifice 20, via a conduit 17, at a rate controlled by the mechanism 10, which is mounted on an extension 11, of the turbine shaft. The mechanism 10 comprises a yoke 30 provided with two arms 31 to which is fixed a rectangular spring steel frame 32. This frame provides the spring steel members 35 carrying the flyweights 37 which abut one another when the turbine shaft is stationary. The orifice 20 is positioned close to the faces 42 of the flyweights 37 leaving a small space 43 the size of which is adjustable by the use of shims 22. As the turbine shaft is rotated, the flyweights 37 will separate at a predetermined speed of rotation forming a passage therebetween allowing fluid to escape through the orifice 20. The orifice 20 is larger than a restriction 24, Fig. 1, in the conduit 16 so that the pressure on the actuator 15 will be decreased, and this will close the valve 14 to reduce the fluid flow to the turbine. The loading of the spring members 35 may be adjusted by the use of screw threads 40, Fig. 3, or shims 41 or both. In place of the flyweights 37, a single spring and flyweight may be used, or depending on the design of the turbine, the movement of the flyweights may be arranged to close rather than open the fluid orifice.</p>
