A gas-check and centering device for cartridge-operated tool missiles comprises a blunt-nosed cap 1 which encloses the perforating tip of the missile within a recess 11 and has forwardly and rearwardly sloping surfaces 15 and 16 meeting in a peripheral edge 17 which frictionally engages the bore of the tool barrel C. The missile is frictionally gripped about its shank by the rear portion of the cap, the tapered nature of which allows the use of missiles whose diameters may vary slightly one from another, and the tip of the missile is located in a depression 12. The front surface 14 of the cap may be flat, concave or roughened to improve its grip upon working surface S. The cap is preferably made of synthetic plastic material.
