Acrylonitrile is prepared by reacting in a reactor a gaseous mixture comprising propylene, ammonia and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst which is an oxygen-containing molybdenum compound at a temperature of at least 500 DEG F., periodically measuring the oxygen content of the effluent from the reactor, and regulating the amount of oxygen introduced into the reactor in accordance with the oxygen measurements so as to maintain the oxygen content in the reactor effluent above about 0.1 mole per cent. Specified catalysts are bismuth molybdate and bismuth phosphomolybdate. Examples are given, together with an example in which oxygen is absent from the reactor effluent. Specification 867,438 is referred to. |
