Disclosed is an emergency stop device that is of an elevator and that can improve the installation characteristics of the elevator. To this end, the device is provided with: a frame (24) that is disposed in the proximity of a sash pulley at the bottom of a car (10) and guided in a guide rail (11) of the elevator and that supports the car (10) from below; a gripping mechanism (20) that is provided on the guide rail (11) side of the frame (24) and that grips and releases the guide rail (11); and an operation mechanism (22) that joins the gripping mechanism (20) and a speed governor rope (18) disposed on the reverse side from the guide rail (11) of the sash pulley and that causes the gripping mechanism (20) to hold the guide rail (11) when the speed governor rope (18) is stopped during the motion of the car (10); and the operation mechanism (22) has a configuration provided to the guide rail (11) side of the frame (24) to which the gripping mechanism (20) is provided. |
