[Also in Divisions F2 and F3] A method of making packing containers suitable for receiving individual rounds of ammunition comprises forming an opan ended tubular sleeve of circular crosssection by helically winding a strip of vulcanized fibre using an adhesive to join adjacent convolutions, and providing end-closures for the sleeve, at least one end closure being detachable. The vulcanized fibre is produced by passing a cellulosic material eg. paper obtained from rags, through a salt solution, e.g. zinc chloride, or an acid solution and then compressing the material, the paper optionally being impregnated with glycerine or a vulcanized oil. After winding, the tube may be reshaped to an elliptical, triangular, square or polygonal crosssection. The edges of adjacent convolutions may abut, in which case the edges may be bevelled, or they may overlap. The container may comprise a plurality of helically wound strips of the same or different thickness, the seam of an inner strip optionally being covered by the convolutions of an outer strip. The, end closures may be of metal, plastics or vulcanized fibre and may be riveted or bonded to the tube. The external surface of the container may be treated with a moisture-proof lacquer or a plastics material, the latter being applied either as a preformed foil or by dipping or spraying. Suitable adhesives are those based on epoxide resins. The detachable end closure may be held in place by a water-tight adhesive tape. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, the container 1 is made by winding four strips of vulcanized fibre, the two outer windings being shorter than the two inner windings to provide a reduced-diameter neck 5. The closure 3 is also wound from four strips, with the outer two longer than the inner two to define a recess 51, that co-operates with the neck 5. The metal end closures 2, 21 are riveted and adhesively secured in place. A waterproof tape seals the joint between parts 1, 3 when they are assembled. Inserts of vulcanized fibre or foamed rubber may be provided to prevent damage to the contents. Both endclosures may be detachable.
