A process for generating an internal spherical cavity in a workpiece comprises rotating a body member relative to the workpiece, said body member having a cutting tool pivotable relative thereto about an axis normal to the axis of rotation of the body member, the simultaneous rotation and pivoting of said body member and cutting tool producing an internal cavity of generally spherical configuration. The device for use in the process comprises a body portion 10 having a pivotable tool holder 13 actuated through at least 90 degrees by lever 24 and link 28 connected to a slidable inner portion 16. Handle 34, or alternatively 31, attached to a stationary outer portion 17 moves the rotating inner portion 16 along the body 10. In further embodiments the pivotable tool holder may have two, three, or four cutting tools set to give different depths of cut and pivotable through 90, 180, 270 or 360 degrees. The pivoting of the tool holder may be operated by a sliding rack (49) (Fig. 3, not shown) and (76) (Fig. 7, not shown) engaging a pinion gear which then either drives a gear train, a chain arrangement or a ball train (88) (Fig. 9, not shown) to move the tool holder. The pivoting of the tool holder through an angle greater than 90 degrees enables the spherical cavity to have its max. diameter below the surface of the workpiece. An additional feature incorporated in the body 10 is an eccentric adjusting device (69) (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) and (90) (Fig. 8, not shown), for allowing limited adjustment to offset minor misalignment of the device relative to the workpiece.
