Copolymers prepared from hydroxyl-group containing esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acids, an aromatic vinyl compound and a further ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, said copolymer having a hydroxyl group content of 0.1 to 10% are reacted with polyisocyanates. The copolymers may be made by solution techniques and together with solutions of isocyanates may be brushed or sprayed on to substrates. Copolymers exemplified are hydroxy-propyl methacrylate/styrene/butyl acrylate and glycol methacrylate/styrene/butyl acrylate cross-linked with the reaction product of trimethylol propane and tolylene diisocyanate. Many other materials are specified. The products are alkali- and solvent-resistant coatings. Titanium dioxide may be incorporated.ALSO:Porous or non-porous supports such as textiles, fleeces, leather or synthetic plastics are coated with the reaction product of a polyisocyanate and a copolymer having a hydroxyl group content of 0,1-10% by weight and prepared from a hydroxyl group containing ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, an aromatic vinyl compound and a further ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid. Preferably the polymeric material and the polyisocyanate are brushed or sprayed on the support and then heated. Other ingredients such as titanium dioxide may be added. |
