The crankcase (12) has a housing that is formed of a through-flow opening of coolant and is fluidly separated from a lower coolant chamber (14) and a middle coolant chamber (16). The lower and middle coolant chambers are fluidically separated from each other by an intermediate element provided on the housing. An upper coolant chamber (26) is connected to a cylinder head (24) of an internal combustion engine (10) and is guided in a vertical direction above the lower and middle coolant chambers.
