The present disclosure relates to an apparatus and method for avoiding a side crash of a vehicle, and more particularly, to a system and method for avoiding a side crash of a vehicle which: senses an adjacent vehicle approaching the vehicle using a camera, a radar device, and an ultrasonic sensor which have been mounted on the vehicle; allows a control unit to expect a crash between the vehicle and the adjacent vehicle, and to output a driver warning instruction and a crash avoidance instruction, thereby warning a driver of a crash risk; and thus easily avoids a crash between the vehicle and the adjacent vehicle through an automatic control of the vehicle. The present disclosure provides a system for avoiding a side crash of a vehicle, including: a camera mounted on a front surface of the vehicle and configured to photograph an image of a front view of the vehicle and to output image information; a radar device mounted on a rear surface of the vehicle and configured to sense an adjacent vehicle and to output a rear vehicle sensing signal; a plurality of ultrasonic sensors mounted on a side surface, and configured to sense an adjacent vehicle positioned by the side of vehicle and to output a side vehicle sensing signal; a control unit connected to the camera, the radar device, and the ultrasonic sensors, and configured to receive the image information, the rear vehicle sensing signal, and the side vehicle sensing signal and to output a driver warning instruction and a crash avoidance instruction when a crash between the vehicle and an adjacent vehicle is expected; a warning unit for receiving the driver warning instruction from the control unit and performing a warning operation; and a crash avoidance unit for receiving the crash avoidance instruction from the control unit and driving the vehicle to avoid a crash between the vehicle and the adjacent vehicle.
