A portable electrically driven clipping machine comprises a cutter blade rotatably mounted in a chamber and connected to a shaft of an electric motor which is adapted to be energized by a portable electric battery, the blade having a resilient connection to the motor shaft such that on rotation of the latter the blade is displaced radially outwardly by centrifugal force and projects through a peripheral opening in the chamber. The machine illustrated is a hedge trimmer and comprises two dished members 10, 12 spaced apart to define the chamber. The blade 15 when at rest is retracted into the chamber by means of an elastic band which passes around a projection on the blade and two projections 8 on a counter balance weight 22 which rotates with the blade. When the shaft 17 rotates the centrifugal force on the blade overcomes the tension in the band and a slot 20 in the blade permits radially outward movement of the blade. A guard plate 1 is provided above the member 10. The trimmer is adapted to be plugged into a portable storage battery. |
