An oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate or borate of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, strontium or barium, having an alkaline character is mixed in powder form with powdered sulphur to improve its burning qualities. Best results are obtained with 1-2 per cent. by weight of sodium bicarbonate. The agent should be well dispersed in the sulphur which should preferably pass a 100 mesh B.S. sieve.
