The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a glass substrate which can prevent foreign matters from being mixed into melted glass in a clarifying process of the melted glass. The method for manufacturing a glass substrate comprises a melting step, a clarifying step, and molding step. In the clarifying step, the melted glass (G) flows in a clarifying pipe (41) made of platinum or alloys of platinum to form a raised space (41c). The raised space (41c) is formed above a face (LS) of the melted glass (G) in the clarifying pipe (41). The clarifying pipe (41) includes a vent pipe (41a) protruding outwardly from the outer wall surface of the clarifying pipe (41) and a receiving portion (41d) mounted above the face (LS) of the melted glass (G). The vent pipe (41a) communicates the raised space (41c) with the outside space of the clarifying pipe (41). The receiving portion (41d) covers a portion of the cross section of the vent pipe (41a) in the longitudinal direction of the vent pipe (41a). |
