1,216,458. Pattern recognition. BENDIX CORP. 30 April, 1969 [28 May, 1968], 'No. 21983/69. Heading G4R. An orientation-independent pattern feature extractor, for automatic pattern recognition, rotates an image of the pattern on an image slicer input face divided into parallel slices for linearly integrating the light flux incident upon each slice, voltages non-linearly related to the flux incident on each slice being summed and memorized at N predetermined rotational positions during the rotation, the memorized voltages being fed to N electrical adders via an NXN matrix of electrical weights. Each slice feeds the light it receives via optical fibres to a respective photo-cell, the photo-cell outputs being squared then summed. The summer output is routed to respective capacitor memories at particular times in synchronism with the image rotation (which is achieved with a dove prism or 3-prism rotator). Each memory feeds each of a set of further-summers through a respective weighted resistor, each memory using an identical -set of resistors but the connections from the latter to the further summers being cyclically permuted in going from one memory to the next. A maximum selector passes the highest of the further summer outputs to a thresholder and identifies the further summer it came from. |
