CARBON SUPPORTED METAL-LIGAND COMPLEX ADDITIVES FOR SOLID POLYMER ELECTROLYTE FUEL CELLS

An improved additive for use in solid polymer electrolyte fuel cells is disclosed. The improved additives comprise a carbon support, a metal chelating organic ligand, and a hydrogen peroxide decomposition catalyst. The ligand is grafted onto the carbon support and the hydrogen peroxide decomposition catalyst is complexed with the ligand. The metal chelating organic ligand can be 1,10-phenanthroline, terpyridine and their derivatives. The hydrogen peroxide decomposition catalyst can be a metal ion or metal particle. This catalyst can be used in proton exchange membrane electrolytes, catalyst layers, and the like.
