[Also in Division B7] A straddle carrier for handling shipping containers includes a frame 10 supported by four pairs of wheels 80 and steering mechanism (see Division B7) for selectively steering the wheels according to a " circle " mode wherein the front and rear wheels are turned in opposite directions and according to a " crab " mode wherein all the wheels are turned in the same direction. The frame 10 has two sidewalls 12 connected at the top by transverse horizontal members. One wheel of each pair is driven through a chain drive 78 by an individual hydrostatic motor 76 fed from one of two pumps driven by an engine 40 mounted on a cantilevered platform 36 supporting a driving cab 38. Another engine-driven pump supplies lifting rams 42 connected by cables or chains 44, 46 to carrier beams 48, 50 for suspending a container 8. |
