Two series of articles (not shown) are fed by respective roller conveyers 10, 12, each article being temporarily halted and released by gating fingers 22 and being conveyed onwards by respective endless conveyers 14, 16. The articles on the conveyer 14 are successively inverted by a system of rotary fingers 238 and then pass via a belt conveyer 18 to respective compartments of an endless flight-conveyer 34. The series of articles on the conveyer 16 are delayed in succession by a series of gating finger assemblies 26 and 28 in relation to the progress of the articles on the conveyer 14. The timing is such that a given article on the conveyer 16 is fed to a compartment of the conveyer 34 that has previously received an article from the conveyer 14 released by the fingers 22 at the same time as the release of the given article. A belt conveyer 20 similar to the conveyer 18, may be adjusted to an upwardly inclined position so that the given article is fed on to the top of the inverted article. The gating fingers 22 are normally held in raised position and are lowered after a predetermined time interval when articles obstruct a photo-electric gate 100. The inverter fingers 238 and the gating finger assemblies 26 and 28 are actuated by linkage driven by cams driven in synchronism with a main drive for the conveyers 10, 12, 14 and 16. Two further gating mechanisms 168 and 170 are driven by similar means. Adjustable article guides 156 and 158 are mounted on either side above each of the belt conveyers 18 and 20. The inclination of the latter may be adjusted by a screw 152 and slot 150 (Fig. 4). |
