1282540 Active carbon filter for water METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 14 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 43857/70 Heading BID [Also in Division Cl] A downward flow filter for water comprises a bed of granular activated carbon, a closable outlet 1 through which the bed is discharged when spent and inlets 2, 3 for delivering flushing water and air to the space below the bed to aid such discharge, the bed being supported above a nozzle plate by an intermediate layer of gravel G. In a circular or square-sectioned bed outlet 1 comprises at least one pipe as shown, whose upper end extends to flush with or just above the lower surface of the bed. In a rectangular-sectioned bed, one or more longitudinal and parallel troughs are provided having vertical, curved or diverging walls extending up to or into the bed. A trough may be slightly inclined to discharge spent carbon at one end. Flushing water may be supplied to the trough at the other end, or to a perforate pipe extending along the trough, or to nozzles along the trough floor, to assist the water and air delivered to the underside of the bed in discharging spent carbon from the trough. During discharge the bed is kept flooded while water and air are supplied together or alternately to agitate the bed and enable it to flow freely from the housing. |
