[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Organic reactions are effected using as catalyst a resin-metal complex which is insoluble in the reaction and which has been produced by reacting an ion-exchange resin with a metal co-ordination compound having at least two ligands bonded to a metal atom, so that the resin becomes chemically bonded to the metal atom, the metal atom being coordinately bonded to at least one donor atom. The reaction between the resin and the coordination complex may be one of ion-exchange or ligand exchange or both and the metal may be co-ordinately bonded to ligands outside the resin. In examples: (3), (4) and (9) allyl chloride is reacted with CO to give a mixture of but-3-enoyl chloride, crotonyl chloride and 3- chlorobutanoyl chloride using catalysts prepared by reacting a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer containing SO 3 Na or SO 3 H groups with Pd(NH 3 ) 4 Cl 2 or Pt(NH 3 ) 4 Cl 2 , or by reacting a porous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer containing dimethylaminomethyl groups with K 2 PdCl 4 ; (7) allyl methyl ether is reacted with CO to give methyl but-3-enoate using the Pd(NH 3 ) 4 Cl 2 derived catalysts mentioned above; (14) vinyl acetate and propionic acid are reacted to give vinyl propionate and acetic acid and (15) vinyl acetate with some acetaldehyde are prepared from ethylene, O 2 and acetic acid using the K 2 PdCl 4 derived catalyst mentioned above with or without a further SnCl 2 treatment; (22) propylene, propanol-1 and CO are reacted to give n-butyl and isobutyl propionates using the reaction product of a porous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer containing organophosphine groups and bis-benzonitrilepalladium dichloride; (24), (26), (27), (28) and (29) hexene-1 is reacted with CO to give n-heptanal and 2- methylhexanal, sometimes with 2-ethylpentanal using the reaction product of the abovementioned organophosphine - containing resin and tristriphenylphosphinerhodium (I) chloride, the reaction product of a porous styrene. divinylbenzene copolymer containing SNa groups and sodium hexachlororhodate (III) and NaCl and the reaction product of a porous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer containing dimethylaminomethyl groups with (Rh(H 2 O) 3 )Cl 3 . |
