摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high contrast liquid crystal display device capable of suppressing leak light in a black display state and having improved gradation inversion in halftone display.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises: a first polarizing film 20; a first retardation region 24; a liquid crystal cell in which a liquid crystal layer is sandwiched by a pair of substrates and liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are oriented in parallel with a surface of the pair of substrates in black display; and a second polarizing film 22. A slow axis of the first retardation region 24 is arranged orthogonal to or parallel to a long axis of liquid crystal molecules of a liquid crystal cell substrate adjacent to the first retardation region 24 with a voltage not being applied to the liquid crystal molecules. The liquid crystal cell operates in lateral electric field mode. The first retardation region 24 at least includes a first retardation layer and a second retardation layer having different retardation values to each other.
