A credit card or the like 10 which controls the operation of an automatic card system such as a cash dispenser has recorded on it a term of availability which is read by card reader 11 and stored in register 12. A term setting circuit 15 of the system sets a second term of availability, including the time at which the card is presented to the system, and the two terms are compared by collating circuit 16. If a predetermined relationship exists between the two terms dispensation by cash dispenser 17 is permitted and a new unit term of availability determined by a second setting circuit 20 and succeeding that set by the first setting circuit 15 is written on the card by writing head 19. An identification number read from the card and the amount dispensed may also be permanently recorded by register 13. In the embodiment described the unit term of availability is one month. To allow for the use of a card in say October which has not been used in September, the effective term set by the system may include at least one preceding month as well as the month in which the card is presented, or alternatively the effective term of the card is considered as the month read from the card and at least one of the succeeding months. |
