Cpds. of formula (I): where R1 = H or hydroxy; R2 = H or lower alkyl; and their acid-addition salts are prepd. by converting the ether where X = methyl, ethyl or benzyl; R3 = H or XO; into hydroxy gps. This may be carried out by heating (II) with (a) strong aq. mineral acids; (b) with the hydrochloride of an organic base; (c) with a Lewis acid in inert solvent; (d) by heating with a cpd. (III): R4-Mg-Y where R4 = lower alkyl; Y = halogen etc.
