A method of processing a chroma format for an MPEG(Moving Picture Expert Group) video is provided to set the chroma format individually both on a sequence layer and on layers below the sequence layer and to use the chroma format based on the layer for controlling picture quality of each region specifically and mixing/compressing the picture quality in accordance with characteristics of the picture quality. A method of processing a chroma format for an MPEG video comprises the steps of: setting a predetermined field of a sequence layer as an individual set code of notifying a chroma format individually(S21); setting the individual chroma format code for at least one layer of a GOP(Group Of Picture) layer, a picture layer, a slice layer, and a Macroblock layer(S22); and transmitting a bit row of the MPEG video syntax which is set with the individual set code and the individual chroma format code(S23). The individual set code is set in the chroma format field placed in the sequence extension, and a value of the individual set code is 00. When the individual set code is not set, the chroma format laid on the sequence layer is applied to all lower layers. |
